speed-dating with hiroshima&miyajima

Been to Hiroshima for a weekend trip with my boyfriend.[10.08. -12.08.2012] In fact our little trip started already Thursday evening after work. We headed to Takasago, where Dai's parents live, by train. When I first arrived in Japan I lived there for a few weeks and it feels a bit like „home“ to me. But since we've moved to Kobe I didn’t have a chance to go back and visit Dai's parents. Dai often goes to Takasago at the weekend, but my work schedule has always made it impossible to join.

We slept there and got up very early on the next day (me at 5:30a.m.). We borrowed the car from Dai's mother. They have two cars, but we needed Okaa-san's car because hers is connected to ETC (electronic toll collection). In Japan you pay tolls for using motorways/autobahn. You pay the money cash at the gates or if you're electronic connected, it will be billed later. Apparently if you're connected, you get discounted rates... but it still costs about 7000-8000yen to go to Hiroshima (round-trip).. I think these toll-fees are ridiculous. In addition to parking fees and gas, going by car costs almost as much as going by express-bus/night-bus.

We were scared to get into traffic jams, that’s why we left early. However the roads were empty and we arrived much earlier than expected. Before we wanted to enter Hiroshima City, Dai wanted to pay a visit to his friend Sogabe-san. Luckily, he was OK to meet up earlier. We arrived around 10:30 at his place and chatted for a while. Then he suggested to go to Okonomi-mura. It's a famous/touristy place for eating Okonomiyaki. The whole building is dedicated to Okonomiyaki, lining one food stall after another: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okonomi-mura

So no big surprise .. we had Okonomiyaki for lunch. Traditional ingredients plus squid and shrimps. I deleted the soba from mine though. I don’t hate soba, but I am generally not a big fan of noodles.

Thank you Sogabe-san for inviting us to lunch!

After that Sogabe-san said goodbye and went to meet his kids/family. He is actually living and working in Düsseldorf, but his family stays in Japan. So Dai and him talked about good old times in Düsseldorf or the latest news from there. Düsseldorf has a big and strong japanese community. Dai used to live there for 7 years. I think he misses Düsseldorf/Germany a little bit, too. :)

Anyway, after regaining some energy, Dai and me were ready for some sight-seeing. I researched several art museums and chose the cheapest and most convenient one. The Prefectural Art Museum Hiroshima was „cheap“ (600 Yen for a combined ticket to the permanent exhibition and entrance to shukkeien) and connected to the Shukkeien garden, which I wanted to see anyway. Furthermore, it is quite close to Hiroshima castle. Unfortunately, the museum was super disappointing. The regular exhibition consisted only of a handful of paintings (two rooms and maybe 20 paintings, some sculptures)! There were other exhibitions going on, but you had to pay extra.
At least I bought some pretty letter-sets by an artist, I don’t know :D

Luckily, the Shukkeien garden was nice enough to make up for the disappointment and we spent quite some time there. For example the first thing we spotted, was a couple taking their wedding pictures (in traditional costumes). I didn’t want to be rude, so I couldn't get a nice shot from close by.
spotting the red parasol of the bride?

You could buy fish feed for the Koi. There was one really really huge one. The pics I got of it don’t do any justice.. it was HUGE. I'd say about a meter in length.
Feeding the kois and little turtles was fun. At one point about 30-40 kois crowded at one spot to get a bite.
Dai pointing at the giant-koi, the photo doesn't do any justice.

The leftovers/skin of a cicada. Seriously those insects are noisy as hell. Their „singing“ makes me always wake up waaay too early :(

After that we walked to Hiroshima Castle. Most tourist attractions are concentrated in or around the city center of Hiroshima and therefore within walking distance. At least if you're not some lazy bump. Personally, I don't mind walking 30-40 minutes to get somewhere and I do not have any problems to walk up to 7-9 hours a day.

Entrance to the Castle grounds is free and I think there's also quite some stuff to explore ( like a shrine, etc), but we didn’t bother much and headed straight to the main tower:

View on Hiroshima Castle from the "outside"

We paid the admission fee of 350 yen (which is cheap ) and after the huge art museum disappointment I didn’t expect much... BUT it was a really enjoyable museum! Lots of information, lots of english and many many exhibits !
Also including some fun stuff for kids... or kids like me. You  can try on old robes and warrior helmets, etc.

excuse my ugly face

When we were done with the castle, it was time to check in at the hotel. We walked back and checked in, parked the car in a seperately operated parking building and crashed in the hotel room (and got food from a cheap supermarkt. It was pretty much like a GYOUMU-SUPER except it had a different name: Promart http://www.act-cs.co.jp/work/gss/promart.html  just in case u're a cheapo like me and need your DISCOUNT SUPERMARKET no matter where you are :) .

We've spend the two nights at Active Hotel Hiroshima. Which is a very reasonable priced Business Hotel. There were probably more tourists and families than salarymen though. The rooms are small, but you do not need any space, if you stay only a few days and do sightseeing or are on a business trip, right?! If you stayed two weeks, it might be too small.

What I like about these business hotels are the services they provide... fresh towels and toothbrush-sets everyday, room cleaning, free soap/conditioner/etc., some bathing/beauty products, TV, hair dryer, etc. Our Hotel also had a free coffee machine on each floor! And an AWESOME breakfast buffet for free. I hear you already say: All Hotels provide such services...! Yeah, but not for such little money. We paid 3500 Yen per person per night. That's not much more, what you would pay at some hostels in japan and at most of these hostels you have to pay for everything extra (and of course no free breakfast)
The breakfast buffet was so good... I stuffed myself. There was bread, rice, soups, different salads (western/ japanese), pickled stuff, sausages, eggs/omelet, yoghurt/fruits, cereals, coffee, juice, tea,..........

I took a second round including more potatoes
Had much more of the pumpkin salad after finishing this. I think it was pumpkin with cream cheese or something..

Saturday was dedicated to the Memorial Peace Park and the Museum. The entrance fee to the Museum was only 50 Yen!! Well I guess such a museum is well subsidized by government and private sponsors. It took us two hours to get through it. First because it was crowded and second because it was big. I think almost everything was translated to english and there were many details and descriptions provided to the exhibits. You should not miss this museum if you visit Hiroshima.

It's of course a little bit sad and depressing, especially all the parts about the victims. For example burned/shredded school uniforms worn by kids during the bomb attack and descriptions how parents could only identify their kids through the clothes or personal belongings.

After the long museum visit, we wandered through the Memorial Peace Park and up to the Genbaku-dome (Atomic Bomb Dome), the most famous of all the memorial monuments there.

Children's Peace Monument

cam-ho-ing , sorry

A-bomb Dome

there's COFFEE JELLY IN OUR DRINKS. I LOVE COFFEE JELLY.

The afternoon of Saturday was left free for coffee & shopping :) Dai bought some orange-rubber (?) shoes from Adidas and I got two new dresses and rebought some make up... The evening was spent at the Hotel room. I watched Charlie and the chocolate factory on TV (you can switch to English audio or subtitles,if it's provided by the TV programme... does this work on german TV? I don’t think so )

On Sunday morning we got up early again, because we head to check out by 10a.m. ( I need time to get ready :D and I took quite my time at the breakfastt buffet) But we would have left early anyway, because we wanted to drive to Miyajimaguchi and from there take the ferry to Miyajima. It's a lovely, very small, touristy island. It's famous for it's Itsukushima-Shrine/Otorii Gate (World Heritage Site), maple trees, maple-shaped sweets (momiji-manju) and oyster:

On the ferry to Miyajima. I guess these installments on the water are for catching oystrs?!

Yes deers...you totally got the Nara-vibe by this.

the famous otorii gate.. we didnt bother to wander through the muddy sand :P

the only couple picture we got from this trip >o<
btw thats one of the two dresses I bought in Hiroshima. 70% off...it was 1500yen I think

eating  ice cream - monaka ! of course these were maple leaf shaped , too (waffles filled with matcha ice cream and anko )

tourists and deers enyoying a little stream

yakigaki - grilled oyster

goodbye miyajima

Since we had a 3-4 hour ride back home, we couldn’t stay too long but we successfully did or saw most of the main things. I also went to some „folk museum“ on my own, because Dai didn’t want to waste money. And he was right... it was very tiny and not that interesting. One part was dedicated to some current Taiga-Drama (historical TV-drama). Apparently the drama involves some historic events that took place on Miyajima, but I haven't watched it nor am I interested in Taiga-Drama...

In the end I bought Momiji-manju with Goma-filling as an Omiyage (Souvenir/gift) for my colleagues at the restaurant.

We drove back to Takasago, dumped the car and took the train for Kobe and arrived at our flat around 8pm. The whole trip was kind of exhausting but in a GOOD WAY. Next day : WORK. Seems like except for this little escape, I have NO days off in August. That’s also the reason why I procrastinated this entry more than one week.

mou hachi gatsu... schon August!

Omg so lacking behind with blogging ?! I've done a few things/trips in July but haven’t found any time to blog because ...yes....you already know why: my two part-time jobs keeping me buuusy.

On one random day in the first half of July I went to explore my neighboring district called Shin-Nagata. Shin-Nagata is not really nice, but they have some random huge anime figure-monument called tetsujin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetsujin_28-go :

there are also some historic museums but I didn’t bother too look them up (access, fees, etc.). Originally I went to Shin-Nagata because I wanted to check out their Shoes-Plaza. Yes, a mall dedicated to shoes only. There was some special outlet sale going on at that time. Unfortunately, when I arrived at this mall, I found myself in front of CLOSED DOORS. It was closed on a normal Wednesday. Well as far as I could see some of the shoes inside, it was mainly sports/outdoor shoes, comfort shoes and shoes for older generations. But I still wanna check it out one day.

I also went to Kyoto with Lisa. I've met up with her in Osaka and then we rode the JR to Kyoto together. Once there, we purchased the Day-Ticket for the City Bus and went to Gion and other places including the famous Kinkakuji. There, I bought my very first mobile phone strap! Unbelievable, right? Somehow, I never bought one.

We also found some great place for dinner, a small shop specialized in Uni/Ika/sashimi – don ( (rice and different sorts of raw fish, sea urchin, etc as a topping). My bowl of „Sakaidon“ was so damn good. I kept repeating how tasty it was !!

gosh, already july?!

Time is flying by and I spend most of it with working and sleeping.

Btw I've never talked about it here, but apart from my two part time jobs, I also sometimes teach German / do doitsu-kaiwa (german-conversation) privately. But it's a very irregular source of income (like once a week or so). However doing this, already proved me right: I am not made for a teaching position. I am not very patient and I hate to repeat myself all the time. Teaching once a week is already annoying me, doing this every day several hours – no way! No, thank you!

No big issues or changes at work lately. Except that the Hotel Restaurant is still short on staff and I probably won't have many days off again this month. And because there's no one around, I am often alone or with a fellow part-timer in the restaurant. Means „more responsibility“ and not being ordered around so much.

End of June I met up with Naoko in Sannomiya after working at IKEA. We originally planned to go to some spanish bar, but the one we picked was full. So we wandered around and spotted other spanish bars or bars offering tapas, but none looked interesting enough. We ended up in HUB an british pub chain. As I thought, it was filled with foreigners. Food was quite expensive, so we ordered only some cheese plate and sweets. I had normal beer and mango beer. The mango beer was really nice. Naoko paid for me as a belated birthday gift. I returned the favor by paying our cake-sets at Doutor, where we headed after HUB.

On Thursday (5th July) I went to Osaka to help out at a indian cooking event of Lisa's boss. She works for him at a language school as a german teacher, but he also organizes monthly lunch and dinner events, cooking indian and german dishes. I helped at the indian curry lunch til about 5 and then Lisa came in and started her shift, waitressing at the german dinner event. But I was glad I did the indian lunch, because the food was really delicious. Could have been hotter though! It was too mild for my taste.
I also got to wear an indian long blouse, which actually felt really comfortable to wear. Now I want to buy some indian inspired summer clothing. The fabrics are so lightweight and perfect for japans humid&hot summer weather.

seafood curry, curry with chicken and banana, crunchy chicken, aubergine stew, potato dish...but the best were some deep fried tapioka "chips"

I also received my cherryculture.com haul! :

LA Colors 5 Color Metallic Eyeshadow Palette
Price $3.00
Fiesta

only swatched on my arm. Those shadows are not very pigmented. All are shiny/have shimmer. Considering the price, they are probably OK.

MILANI Minerals Blush with Brush
Price $5.75
Luminous
It's a nice color. Not very pigmented either. But that might be a good thing too.. you can hardly put on „too much“ of this and it's good to create a natural / healthy look. A real PRO-aspect of this blush is the packaging. There's a mirror AND a brush attached to it! however it's still lightweight, so this is  practical to carry around!!

LA Girl Luxury Creme Lip Color
Price $2.50
Forbidden Love

color is nice, BUT IT SMELLS unpleasant. And it doesn’t feel good on my lips either. I am probably not going to use this.

NYX The Runway Collection 10 Color Eyeshadow Palette
    Price $8.50
    Champagne & Caviar
not tested yet! Colors look great but some of them look very alike.

    LA Girl Pro Concealer
    Price $2.50
    Creamy Beige
    not tested

    Jordana Best Lash Volumizing Mascara
    Price $2.99
    Black

    not tested

    LA Colors Baked Eyeshadow
    Price $3.50
    Stellar

    not tested

    NYX Round Lipstick
    Price $2.99
    Tea Rose

I will probably use this a lot! It's a cute color, looking quite natural on me (i can only wear natural looking make up because of my jobs). It doesn’t smell and feels good. Probably not long-lasting. Considering the price it's doing its job though!

24. another birthday has passed

Hey ho

a week has passed since my birthday (turned 24), but didn’t find any time to update... I had off on my birthday, but all in all I will work 28 days out of June’s 30 days. You can guess how much I am looking forward to the end of this month ! I have no idea what July will be like... The hotel restaurant I work for is short on staff. Yesterday I was basically doing everything ALONE. Luckily, it was pretty empty and most of the time no customers at all. Of course I know most things by now, it's not like I can't be alone... but if a customer has a special request or a difficult question, I usually don't know how to answer. Also, I don't know how to handle the cashier and honestly speaking, I don’t want to know! I really don’t want to take any responsibility about money/financial matters. At least not how things are at the moment, considering I do not have any sort of employment contract with them and my salary is paid cash. In case anything goes wrong, I am probably fucked.

So on my birthday, I got up late and then went to Osaka in order to meet Lisa. It was a rainy day, so we decided to stay in some large underground mall in Honmachi and also went for coffee in Doutor. We had some confusion about where to meet up and ended up meeting quite late. Lisa, sorry! Time passed by quickly and soon it was time to rush to Nippombashi, where we would meet up with my boyfriend.

We went to an Izakaya. But not quite an ordinary one...
http://www.zauo.com/
At Zauo you can rent a fishing rod, bait and then start fishing. Right away from your seat (at least in our case). It's not really a big deal to catch a fish, since there are plenty of fish in a small pool, but it's still fun. Once you caught one, you have to decide how the fish will be prepared and then it will be served to you. Of course you have to pay for the fish (price varies from the kind of fish you catch). I caught a Tai (sea bream) and of course requested it as sashimi (raw)! BTW whenever a customer catches a fish, the staff will ask for your name and start shouting your name, some paroles and beat the drums. Basically „celebrate“ that you got a fish.
We also ordered some other food. I ate an mentaiko dish... I think it was my first time eating mentaiko and also my first time to have Ochazuke (you have to pour lots of dashi broth over your rice).

After that we walked around in Nippombashi and took purikura at round 1... and headed home at a very reasonable time.

Except for going out on Sunday with my co-workers from IKEA I haven't done anything special. I am busy enough with my working schedules....

So on Sunday we went to an Yakitoriya, an Izakaya specialized in serving chicken dishes. Naturally we had mostly chicken dishes, including chicken hearts (I love chicken hearts). The most special dish was probably the raw horse meat (it was at least the most expensive one).  At such outings it is common to split the bill even. Everyone ended up paying 3500 Yen (35euro), which was considered "cheap" by the others. I thought it was a lot and basically my limit. But yeah it is cheap by japanese standards and Izakaya nights usually end up with  huge bills. Unfortunately I didn’t take many photos that evening :(

I end my entry with a sighting of bad german at DAISO. In the stationery section I saw this  notebook:

too lazy to blog..

Hi there.. probably no one missed me on here, but I still feel i have some sort of obligation to post sth?! I am not really motivated to write a lot though... this post will feature random photos and recent stories but not necessarily in an chronological order.

I've worked a lot, but I also found time to meet friends and do some shopping.
For example my good friend Sara stopped by in Kansai for a quick visit. She came from Tokyo to Osaka by bus because she had some meetings related to her internship in the area. I invited her to stay over at my place. Unfortunately, I had to work that day and we couldn’t meet until 11pm ! We walked through the night, bought random stuff (food/drinks) at several conbinis and just talked, talked, talked... in the morning we had some Vollkornbrot and cheese and it almost tasted/felt german ^^
She had to leave around noon. It was way too short, but really great to see her.

Some days ago I also finally met up with Lisa. Actually Lisa, Sara and me studied together in Düsseldorf and hang out a lot/became really good friends. It's refreshing to meet them here and be able to talk about my feelings, opinions, experiences in a very honest way and to be understood. I mean to be understood the way only another European or German person will understand.

Lisa and me decided to meet up in Nishinomiya because it's more or less in the middle between Osaka and Kobe. It was a rainy day so we skipped on the idea of walking to some park or beach area and paid a visit to Nishinomiya Gardens, which is nicely designed mall and quite big, considering Nishinomiya is not such a big city.

I finally received my first money from my jobs. One of my chefs (buchou) told me, it wasn’t possible to hand over my salary in cash. (That’s why I had to go to Umeda in order to open another bank account...see former blog entry). However on pay-day I checked my bank account 3 times ! Nothing... I started to worry. I also asked my co-workers, if they received their salaries that day. They did. I was almost about to go to someone from the HR department, when I got called and was handed over a brown envelop. It was my salary in cash. I was really happy but then again..why was I told I couldn’t get it in cash? Let's see how it will go this month.

At the end of May I had the chance to take part in a survey job in Osaka. It only took about one and an half hour and they pay was very well. This little job was a great excuse for me to do some shopping in Osaka. I really recommend Honmachi and Semba. Bought 3 new summer shirts/blouses, each for about 1000 Yen. I also got new platform sandals in Kobe for 1500Yen.

some days ago at work a guest in the restaurant got extremely mad at me. He took some tray he found and wanted to use it for taking food from the buffet. However we do not offer trays at out buffet. Guests are expected to use dishes and take only one or two plates at a time. If you want to eat more, then you can take a new plate and go as often to the buffet as you want ! There's no restriction/limitation of how much you can eat/take.. but we don’t offer trays.
Anyway this guest took some tray (which is originally used to transport glasses, coffee, cups, etc and part of the equipment, not for the guests). I told him something like „ I am sorry, but you cannot use this, please use the plates only“ and he EXPLODED. He got mad and requested that people in charge come there etc. Well other Hotel/restaurant staff came and tried to calm him down. He shouted for about half an hour..... Apparently he was drunk.
I don’t think I am at fault for what happened.. but I was still pretty nervous to go to work after the incident... :/ (in the end everything turned out ok though)

raaandom:

25th may i met up with Yukiko-san for chatting/coffee... this time it was my turn to look for some place to go and again I researched some nice spot on tabelog.. I had a tasty strawberry iced milk drink at Zoe.
Yukiko did what many japanese people do and used her days off during golden week for a short trip ! She went to korea and didn't fail to bring me some omiyage (souvenirs/ obligation gifts):
face sheet masks, lip balm and some korean candy

I also got a bit into using face sheet masks lately and was really grateful to receive these. I also sometimes buy them myself:

orange blush from Daiso
I badly wanted to try out orange colored blush! But before spending too much on something that doesn't match me, I've choosen the 105yen version.. I think it does match me, but at work I rather stick to my usual blush color. I use the highlighter a lot though and think about buying some better-quality highlighter. Any recommendations?

matcha (?) flavored pastry filled with anko/mochi cream, was sooo yummy!!

Been to this cafe/restaurant, which is located on/in the kokusai hall in sannomiya... pretty awesome to enjoy ur time on the roof of a big building surrounded by an artificial garden ^^:

Few days ago I met up with Naoko-san and had the urge to talk with her over some drinks after work... nothing's better than an izakaya for such an occasion.! And it wouldn't be me, if I wasnt thinking of a low-budget option:  http://www.torikizoku.co.jp/

i really recommend Torikizoku, if you want to keep ur expenses to a minimum.. Everything is priced at 280 yen (294 with taxes), which makes it easy to calculate... especially if you split the bill etc.

chinese chicken noodle soup I had there
